COLLAB: 5 GYRES UPCYCLED MERCH "PLASTIC FREE PARKS"

Marcus Eriksen and Anna Cummins founded the 5 Gyres Institute to investigate key unanswered questions about plastic pollution:

How much plastic is floating in the world’s oceans? Where is it accumulating? Is it causing harm to people and the planet? And most importantly, what can we do about it?

They explored 50,000 nautical miles in search of plastic on 19 research expeditions, publishing groundbreaking research, building a global network of ambassadors, and inspiring change along the way.

So when 5 Gyres needed merch for their Plastic Free Parks campaign, they didn't want to make anything using new or recycled materials. That's where we came in, as zero waste fashion upcycling experts!

5 GYRES INSTAGRAM POST:

Handmade in Los Angeles, they turn trash into wearable and functional items by upcycling materials like airbags, seatbelts, beer filter cloth, climbing ropes, and clothing that would have otherwise ended up in the landfill.

When we were searching for a sustainable way to bring our #PlasticFreeParks campaign sweatshirts to life, we turned to them to create a limited batch with a special story — and without waste.

At a clothing drive for unwanted textiles, they received a batch of crewnecks from a company that couldn’t use them because they weren’t the right color. Rewilder saw the potential in these perfectly good sweatshirts and eventually turned them into our Plastic-Free Parks collaboration, without adding any new product into the world.

There is enough clothing on the planet to dress six generations. Let’s stop buying new and prioritize reusing, repairing, and repurposing instead.
